- <p> DIED. FRED GWYNNE, 66, actor; of complications from pancreatic
- cancer; in Baltimore, Maryland. Television comedies made Gwynne's
- rumbling bass and skyscraper frame familiar to millions during
- the 1960s, first as the amiable officer Francis Muldoon in Car
- 54, Where Are You? and then as a suburban Frankenstein's monster
- in The Munsters. But the Harvard-educated Gwynne also leaves
- a legacy of major work for the stage: he won raves, for example,
- as Big Daddy in the 1974 Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin
- Roof.
